Tennis superstar Serena Williams has ventured into the fashion industry with her own clothing line.
AFTER STEPPING on to the French Open court in an eye-catching black catsuit, Serena Williams has taken her passion for fashion one step further.
She took to Instagram yesterday (May 30) to announce the launch of her first independent clothing line “for all the ladies out there being awesome”.
She said: “All the moms out there that had a tough pregnancy and have to come back and try to be fierce, in the middle of everything. That’s what this represents.”
In the post, Williams explained the inspiration behind the new career leap.
“They say life is about timing. I learned this lesson at age 18 when I chose to play a light tennis schedule because I wanted to go to fashion school,” she wrote.
“Some criticised my decision, but I knew I had two loves – tennis and fashion – and had to find a way to make them coexist.”
Williams addressed the hardships she had faced in her many attempts to break into the world of fashion. “After 15 years of false starts, and people in fashion telling me ‘no’, it only drove me to work harder.
“As a result, I discovered what it meant to invest in myself, and I allowed that belief in myself to drive me to reach my dream,” she said.
Williams has already made her mark in the industry through a successful collaboration on a clothing collection with sports brand Nike. She signed the $55 million sponsorship deal back in 2003.
Reigning home on women’s visibility, Williams said: “Today, I am proud to launch ‘Serena’, my own online shop. Never stop believing in yourself, you’re worth it. Be seen, be heard.”
The 23-time grand slam winner won her opening match at the French Open on Tuesday (May 30), her first major championship win since giving birth to her daughter Olympia back in September 2017.
